CRACKERS are one of those products that are being experimented with a lot recently. There’s been some new flavours floating around and there’s also been some new types of Cracker. A few restaurants have been sprucing up certain dishes by including some really crisp Ciabatta to give it a slightly more rustic feel but now Jacob’s have gone one step further by turning Ciabatta into Crackers.
Available in three flavours, this new range of Crackers are available in boxes of 18 which are split into six packs of three Biscuits. Although they’re slightly longer and perhaps thicker than most Crackers, three just aren’t enough on their own and it’s becoming quite frustrating having these companies try to tell us what a portion actually is. These are recommended to accompany Soups or Salads as Crouton type products and three would probably work well in this instance, but for lunch you are looking at having two packs at a time.
The three flavours are Plain, Caramelised Onion and Tomato & Basil and all of them are quite floury and very crisp. The Plain ones are a bit dry on their own but react very nicely with any sort of topping and act like any other Cracker as a base for food. These are probably the best to go with a Soup as they won’t take anything away from it or overpower it with another flavour. The Caramelised Onion Crackers add a bit more of a flavour and can actually be enjoyed on their own if you prefer as they’re not too dry. However best results are still when they are topped with something, even Butter could be enough. They suit the standard Cheese combination as Cheese & Onion has always been popular. There is a slight Onion taste but it isn’t too strong and doesn’t overpower anything, it just adds a slight flavour to them which is good.
The Tomato & Basil flavour are probably the most flavourful on their own and therefore would probably be the best suited to going into a Salad. They’d probably accompany a Tomato Soup very nicely as well. There’s a definite Tomato tang to these as well as a Herb-like smokiness from the Basil that gives these Crackers a nice flavour. However you enjoy Crackers, this Ciabatta range from Jacob’s could easily become popular as it is using a latest trend nicely and offers different ways for you to consume them. Just ignore the pack sizes otherwise you may end up going hungry.
